Activities for the summer reading program – FIZZ, BOOM, POP – are:
- Wednesday, July 2: Youngsters can make a glow-in-the-dark bouncy ball at 4 pm.
- Tuesday, July 8: Staff from the Science Center of Iowa will be at the library at 10:30 am.
- Tuesday, July 15: Learn about wind energy from UNI Resources for Energy Education at 4 pm. Sponsored by Junction Hilltop Wind Farm.
- Monday, July 21: Magician Jonathan May will perform his tricks at 4 pm.
- Wednesday, July 30: The summer reading program will wrap up with games, prizes and more at 4 pm.

Jean Borgeson traveled to Woodward on June 24 and met her sister and husband, Dean and Elayne Bice, and their two cousins, Bill Siglin of Woodward, and Ann Siglin of Hollis, NH, who was visiting family in Iowa. As always, the time together was enjoyed and the memories shared were the good ones. There were several local people eating in the same restaurant who knew all of them, so that was fun to connect with those people whom they hadn’t seen for many years.
Several from the Rippey Ladies Aid attended the Grand Junction Presbyterian Church Guest Day on June 25. The guest speaker was Kim Zastrow, who was promoting her book, Threads of Destiny. The book is a biography of her time in 1993 as a missionary nurse in Mogadishu, Somalia, during the outbreak of civil war. She also shared memories of her many years of travel throughout Africa, Europe, and the U.S. She and her husband, Rev. Curt Zastrow, are founders of the Children’s Heritage Foundation. They live in Midland, MI. Kim is a graduate of East Greene and Mercy School of Nursing. She is the daughter of Norman and Shirley Rundle, former Grand Junction residents, who were also visiting in the area this week.
With the county fair looming, I suspect a lot of 4-H kids are feeling that deadline pressure. As I look out my window, the steer is resisting this new adventure of being led. This time of year brings back a lot of memories of those projects that always seem to be done at the last minute. I know my sewing machine always seemed to break during this time of year. I, being a non-4-H mother, had the best guidance from Virgene Morse and Sue Muir! I could always find a working sewing machine in the neighborhood and Linda could learn from the experts!
